Music of 20th century
During 20th century Composers did not look to build on what was standard but again created music freely and used sounds that went against the current grain. It was more refined, delicate, and having a mysterious atmosphere. 20th century music is that it does not fit into the Romantic era's requirements. And because of its own expression and orchestral technique it does not fit into any other category but its own. Musical terms and style started because of diversity of music that was being written. E.g. neo- Romanticism and neo – Classicism
As time goes by the musical styles traditional forms and structures were broken up and recreated or composed using non-Western musical techniques and abstract ideas. Technology also became an extremely important factor in the music making during this time period. Composers have been known to use recording tape as a compositional tool. Electronically created sounds are used in combination with other electronic sounds or played together with traditional music instruments. Most recently, the use of computer technology has affected the world of music making. Some ways in which computers currently alter the face of the music world are by manipulating the performance of instruments in real time.
Music of the 1960s
was characteristic of the revolution that was going on during the decade. It was a time of rebellion and counter-culture in which the younger people were questioning everything, including authority, corporations, the government, and other aspects of everyday life. It was essentially a revolution of the status quo. This gave rise to the Civil Rights Movement of the decade along with other movements that affected the rights of society as a whole.
Music of the 1970s
The 70s created a trend of relaxing music as well as dance music. People may have grown tired of the fighting that happened the previous decade and many of them sought a refuge in dance clubs and other places to enjoy a good time. Out of this idea emerged the Disco movement. Of course, there was still the bands and artists that continued to speak of the ills of society, typically characterized by the punk music of the era. But it seemed to be a much happier era than the 60s proved to be. E.g Beatles let it be. Aerosmith
The musical era of the 1980s Like many other decades, the 1980s was a decade where music was a way to chronicle the times and events of the era. In some ways, the musical genres during the 1980s redefined the way many bands and artists made new music and it still continues to influence music today. Many of the musicians during the 1980s have maintained staying power and are still popular today. Other artists enjoyed a modicum of success during the decade and they are not even widely recognized today, save for the television programs that strive to reunite the bands and give exposure to artists of the time. Following is some descriptions and explanations of the bands and interests that helped to change the face of music in the 80s. MTV, or Music Television,
may have been the single most influential entity in music industry during the 1980s . Premiering in 1981, MTV gave bands and artists greater exposure for their music in a greater and more widely popular medium. The first video ever played on MTV was aptly titled “Video Killed the Radio Star” by the Buggles. Duran Duran is one of the more popular 80s bands that enjoyed the exposure that MTV gave them, too. Many experts have said that MTV is what made Duran Duran one of the most popular bands to come out of the 1980s era.
Music 2000 Present
In recent years, mainstream music has been overtaken by hip-hop and rap music. Though it follows the natural trend of music over the decades, music in the last few years has been repeatedly criticized for its sexual lyrics and violent themes. While many people feel that hip-hop music has an unhealthy focus on sexually-based themes, others feel that rap promotes violence against police officers and innocent citizens. Luckily, many artists are still making music that promotes neither of these ideas but rather more neutral and family-friendly themes. The last few years in the music industry has shown to have a great contrast in styles, themes and personal taste.
